Who We Are…
The Deep River Singers are a North Carolina-based choral ensemble, led by Paul Anderson II, that promotes the performance, education, and preservation of Negro Spirituals. The group was initially formed as part of the "Rediscovering the Spirituals" concert celebrating the launch of the Deep River Podcast. They are now a stand-alone ensemble that strives for excellence and education while spreading the message of the Spirituals.
Our first performance was held in 2022 in Fayetteville, NC at the Cumberland County Arts Council. We have also performed in Raleigh at The Fountain of Raleigh Fellowship, the African American Cultural Festival of Raleigh And Wake County, Carnegie Hall with MidAmerica Productions, and a Presidential Campaign Rally.

Unity
We understand that collective harmony is paramount. Every member should embrace a humble disposition, willingly adapting and accepting changes that best serve the interests of the group. It is through this collective humility that we create music and serve as one harmonious body.

"This is a special group that I believe not only shares the impact but also shares the education of African American Spirituals, and I think that while some could consider it a dying art, it's definitely here. It's definitely now, and I think that our group is a really great example of bringing it to the present day and having a really cool twist on it.”
Devon Cessna, Ticketing/Finance Manager, Bass II
"Deep River Singers has made me grow in so many ways. As managing director, it's helped me grow with my ability to be able to talk to people...It also has given me a stronger sense of friendship and love and creating art together."
DeNesha McAllister, Managing Director, Soprano II
“Being in a group that not just—that has amazing stage presence but the technicality that comes in to being around so many talented musicians is astounding to me…especially in my particular vocal section…I sing with a lot of teachers who are just very educated in what they do…so for example just being on point with my diction, being on point with my pitch and my intonation. All those things have just made me more polished as a singer.”
